Manipur-based film production company has announced plans to do a biopic on the life of Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who won the country’s first silver medal in the 49kg women’s weightlifting event with a lift total of 202 kg at the current Tokyo Olympics.
Seuti Films Production Company President Manaobi MM said, “We are going to make a feature film based on Mirabai Chanu’s life and various other incidents in her life.”
Seuti Films signed an agreement with the star weightlifter and his family at their residence in the village of Nongpok Kakching in the Imphal East district of Manipur for the making of the film.
The script and dialogues for the film will be written by Manaobi MM and will be directed by OC Meira and produced by RK Nalini Devi.
The proposed film will present Mirabai’s childhood and her life in the village; his initiation and training in weightlifting; participation in national and international events and finally; his victory at the Tokyo Olympics. It will also highlight his experiences in the city and other incidents, realistically.
The film will also be subtitled in English and other Indian languages, according to a press release issued by Seuti Films Production.
Mirabai became the first Indian to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics and also the country’s first silver medalist in weightlifting after successfully lifting weights of 84 and 87 kg behind Chinese Zhihu, who lifted 94 kg for create an Olympic record and win gold. Chanu also became the second Indian woman to win a weightlifting medal at the Olympics after Karnam Malleswari, who was the first Indian woman to win a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
